EPIC Project

Children

Image of a child pricking their finger

The EPIC Project with the help of children, young people and their parents as well as nurses and doctors have developed a pack of information for children and young people with Type 1 Diabetes.

This pack of information includes diaries to record blood sugar levels and the insulin units that need to be taken. It also has useful tips for the child or young person about looking after themselves and their diabetes.

We found that it was important that we made our information packs and diaries for the right age groups.

For 6-10 year olds read below:

The information pack and the diary will help the child to remember when to check their blood glucose levels and when to take their insulin.

The information will help them to understand what diabetes is and how they should look after themselves.

It will also help them to do the things that children like to do such as sport or dancing.

For 11-15 year olds read below:

The information pack and diary will help the child or young person to learn more about their diabetes and how to look after themselves. It will help them to record their blood glucose levels and the insulin units they require.

The information provided will help the child or young person to learn how to live with diabetes and still do the things they want to do. There is information on how to take care as they become a teenager and the changes that happen as their body grows.

For 16-18 year olds read below:

The information pack and diary will help the young person understand how to manage their diabetes as they become an adult and an independent person.

The information provided is aimed at the mature young person and the aspects of growing up that they will need to face e.g drinking alcohol.

Our key message for the child or young person is:

You are the one with diabetes, this information and diary is for you

Taking part in the study

The study is now testing the information packs and diaries in diabetes clinics in England and Wales. Doctors and Nurses at these clinics will ask children and young people and their parents if they would like to take part.
